Brecon is a 10 minute drive to the west and has a cinema, theatre, cathedral, leisure centre, supermarket but best of all a lovely covered market that is home to Malcolm, an excellent fishmonger, Paddy Sweeney the butcher and a similarly good greengrocer.

Brecon also hosts the world famous Brecon Jazz festival each year and is a gateway to the Royal Welsh Show held at Builth Wells every July. The Griffin Inn at Felinfach, a gastropub run by Edmund Inkin (www.eatdrinksleep.ltd.uk), is a particularly good place to eat.

Hay-on-Wye is about 35 minutes away by car and is a book lover’s paradise. It also provides a good break in the journey for any guests wanting to sample the Michelin starred restaurants of Ludlow further to the north or visit Hereford and its famous chained library and thirteenth century Mappa Mundi.

Big Pit, the coal mining museum in Blanaevon, is also worth a visit and a 30 minute drive over the hills.
